Artist Statement

My work focuses on ecosystems and the hierarchy of living beings, and the social and environmental consequences of humans’ impact on the environment. I draw heavily from thoughts about land as a resource and how it exists in various systems. I see the natural world as a place separate from the human world, and one that certainly holds a degree of magic and mystery, and capturing that sentiment is central to my existence as an artist.
While my body of work is largely print-based, I am becoming increasingly interested in materials and their relation to systems of production, often ones that are socially and environmentally unsustainable. I feel that as an artist, I am obligated to address the source of the materials I am using in my work and the role I play in these systems. Even “handmade” objects are created from materials that are produced in an unsustainable way, and I want to be conscious of that.
